Take a second to switch over to your historic fantasy persona while I introduce you to the world of “The Witcher”. A show perfect for you if you find series such as “Game of Thrones”, “Shadow & Bones”, or “The Wheel of Time” interesting.
“I’d recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy, period pieces, or science fiction,” history teacher Anastacia Kelley said.
The TV series “The Witcher” is based on a book series written by Andrzej Sapkowski. The first book in the series, “Sword of Destiny”, was published in 1992. The TV series was released on Netflix on December 20, 2019. The TV series was directed by multiple people, but most recently by Marc Jobst.
The show is based in a world known as ‘The Continent’, where humans, witchers, elves, dwarfs, halflings, beasts, and other such mythical creatures roam the streets. Geralt of Rivia and Ciri, princess of Cintra, are somehow linked by destiny. Together they face many challenges. Due to such reasons, Geralt who is a witcher and professional monster hunter trains Ciri to become one. So in the future, she can protect herself from the species that she is destined to face.
While most reviews of “The Witcher” are positive, others allude to poor acting and nonexistent chemistry between the lead actors as the major complaints of the show. The main actors in the show include Henry Cavill (Geralt), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Freya Allan (Ciri), and Joey Bates (Jaskier). Despite these negative comments, Freya Allen has won Best Younger Performer specifically for acting in “The Witcher.”
“The acting is okay,” Kelly said. “It does get better though later on.”
Many fans are disappointed that lead actor Henry Cavill is being replaced by Liam Hemsworth for the role of Geralt in season four. This is due to him needing more time to perform his role as Superman in the DC movies.
“I hope Liam will be able to do the role justice,” English teacher Ashley Swain said. “Cavill was a big reason why many fans enjoy the show, so he will definitely be missed.”
With the new season set to release in early 2025, you have plenty of time to catch up on the first three seasons on Netflix.
